Efteling have announced the arrival of a further new addition for the park's 2025 season.

Talking all about it in today’s release Efteling reveal plans to add the classic fairytale ‘The Princess and the Pea’ to the Fairytale Forest’s current line up next year.

In this classic fairytale first told by Hans Christian Andersen a princess spends the night with a pea concealed beneath her twenty mattresses and down blankets.

Up until present only the pea itself has been on display to those exploring perched on a cushion within the Efteling Fairytale Museum, however 2025 will see Efteling add their 31st fairytale to the line up.

The Princess and the Pea is set to be housed within a brand new gazebo situated between the Troll King and Mother Holle’s Well located on the edge of the forest.

The princess and the pea marks Efteling’s first new addition to the Fairytale Forest since The Six Swans back in 2019.

The Princess and the Pea will be added to Efteling's Fairytale Forest for 2025.

Work on adding The Princess and the Pea is set to commence in Autumn of this year and is planned to be ready for guests to view by no later than Spring of next year.

Talking all about the new Fairytale addition Sander de Bruijn – Head designer and manager of the Design & Experience department revealed he used a sketch by Anton Pieck for inspiration when designing The Princess and the Pea;

 “His working method and perfection are still the starting point for new designs in the World of Efteling”

“To highlight something small in the foreground, Anton Pieck often placed a grand backdrop behind it.

We also apply that principle here. The impressive hotel forms a perfect backdrop for the gazebo, which is actually a royal annex of the Efteling Grand Hotel.

With the same style elements and design, that connection is immediately made, and the link with overnight stays becomes extra applicable.”

So, how does the classic children’s fairytale of the Princess and the Pea go? Well, here we go!;

“Once upon a time, there was a prince who wanted to marry a real princess. On a stormy evening, in the pouring rain, a princess from a distant land knocked on the palace’s door.

The queen, intrigued by the girl, welcomed the ‘princess’ into her home and gave her a pea test to decipher whether she was a true princess fit for her son.

Before the princess went to bed, the queen hid a pea under twenty mattresses and twenty down blankets.

After all, only a real princess would be sensitive enough to feel the pea and, therefore, be unable to sleep…”

The Princess and the Pea will open for public viewing within Efteling’s Fairytale Forest in Spring of 2025 – Exact date still to be confirmed.
